This is always the big question with any online course of study. In the United States and Canada, accreditation is the voluntary self regulation process used by colleges, schools and universities to maintain high quality education. This replaces the government regulation of education found in other countries around the world. Accreditation is carried by private non-profit organisations for this purpose.

In the case of Interior Design, accreditation means that a course is evaluated and assessed by interior design practitioners and educators providing quality assurance that the entire course meets a high standard of education for students. Enrolling in an accredited interior design program, a student may be confident that the program meets the standards recognised by the profession and fulfils the educational requirements necessary for entry into the profession upon graduation. As a matter of interest, the Council for Interior Design Accreditation has evaluated the interior design programs of hundreds of colleges and universities throughout North America for more than 35 years.

Conclusion
There are some interior design courses available online and a few credible schools are offering four year online programs but the student should proceed with caution. Online programs and distance learning courses in the field of interior design may not be recognised as a sufficent or credible form of education. The big question is whether the interior design online program will provide the student with credentials required to be licensed in most states and provinces or to be hired by most interior design firms.
