Most folk have an idea of their dream kitchen. The kitchen is one of the most important areas of your home, if for no other reason than so much time is spent there. The kitchen can be a meeting place, a work area, a laboratory and even a dining area. It must allow easy and accessible storage as well as look good so that people would actually want to spend time there doing things that is considered by most to be work. It is no wonder people commit so much time to kitchen interior design.

The Function of the Kitchen
As with any interior design project, the prime consideration for any kitchen interior design is function. In other words, what is this space to be used for? Some of the considerations are the number of meals a day to be prepared, what kind of food, amount of storage space required, is it to be an eating or sitting area?

Everyone's needs and desires are different. A good starting point for having a good kitchen interior design is to understand the basic layout concept of the kitchen work triangle.

The Open Plan Kitchen
The open plan kitchen makes an issue of labor saving.
It is important to use common sense and remember that there are three essential fittings in kitchen interior design – they are the sink, the cooker and the refrigerator. Ideally these should form a work triangle with sink and the washers on the wall if possible to allow easy access to the plumbing and piping. The cooker and the refrigerator should then be sited in the two opposite corners. The placement of these items will depend on the shape and layout of the kitchen.

What are the Kitchen Layouts?
There appears to be a layout for just about every letter of the alphabet. There are E shaped kitchens, L shaped kitchens, double L shaped kitchens, U shaped kitchens, G shaped kitchens, long narrow or corridor type kitchens, square shaped and the one walled kitchens. Whatever the layout, the kitchen interior design must cover the various functions such as preparing and cooking meals, cleaning up after meals, storing food and kitchen utensils and maybe even space for dining.
The cooking area should therefore be close to the cooking pots, the cooking utensils and the refrigerator with the work area close by. The different room layouts open up the possibilities for kitchen interior design to individual tastes and in the end should be a reflection of the home owner’s personality and style.

Kitchen Fittings
Choose the kitchen fittings according to kitchen interior design theme. Sinks come in different shapes and sizes. There are many items to be stored in a kitchen so plenty of storage space is required. Storage systems can vary can be anything from the standard shelves to unusual but practical wall grid system of wire frames with attached baskets and shelves. Kitchen cabinets will help set the tone for the whole room. Design the kitchen cabinets according to lifestyle needs and functions.

Kitchen Appliances
Kitchen interior design is constantly changing and developing. There are different types of ovens and cook tops to choose from. There are the conventional convection with built in grill and burners, hot air ovens and microwave ovens. Energy efficient, environmentally friendly kitchen appliances are now more popular. Work surfaces and wall coverings are a major consideration as is the flooring. All of these features must be durable and easy to clean. Careful thought must also be given to the ventilation and the lighting as these are often overlooked in kitchen interior design.

Conclusion
Your kitchen interior design is one of the most important areas of the home. It is no longer the woman's domain. In modern houses the kitchen is no longer at the rear of the household but is sometimes one of the largest, aesthetically appealing and possibly most used rooms in the home. It is fair to say that the kitchen plays a huge part in determining the effectiveness of the overall home interior design.
